Avid announced here at NAMM 2015 a streamlined version of their flagship DAW Pro Tools, called Pro Tools First. Aimed at beginners starting out or professionals wanting to record their own music in a professional environment, Pro Tools First is a truly free version of Pro Tools that lets you record up to 16 tracks of audio, mix with Avid’s AAX plug-ins, and also store and access your files thru Avid’s cloud service.
Prior to this, you needed to purchase and connect extra hardware, such as an audio interface or a dongle, in order to use Pro Tools on your computer. Having something like this that’s truly free in the sense that you don’t need to cash out for anything extraneous should bring the already popular DAW to more bedroom producers and budding recordists.
• Pro Tools First is set to be released in the first quarter of 2015 and is downloadable at Avid’s website for free.
