What Big Moment Changed Everything In YOUR DJing?

Maybe you’re relatively new to DJing. Or, maybe you’ve been doing it for half a lifetime. Maybe when you read that headline, you thought, “Yup, I know the moment!”, or maybe you weren’t sure if you’ve even had one yet. That’s all absolutely fine.

When we asked our team here, we heard all kinds of tales, from James Hype pointing to his iconic One More Time vs Losing It transition on YouTube that went viral back in 2018, to our now scratch tutor Steve Canueto recalling the time I asked him, “Have you ever tried to scratch on a controller?” – a moment that led to us working together, and making the world’s first and best-selling DJ controller scratch course, Scratching For Controller DJs.

Watch the video. I share my “moment” there, as well as a couple of close contenders. But then know this: It doesn’t really matter whether you think you’ve had one yet or not. The truth is that you can’t manufacture these moments, and you don’t usually plan for them. To borrow from an old Pet Shop Boys lyric, “Just when you least expect it, just what you least expect.”

For instance, James had forgotten about his transition, recorded on an iPhone, when it got posted on YouTube and went viral. Steve had only popped around to see me as a friend because he needed some help with his Traktor software when I asked him that question. And my “moment”? The most important thing is to have the courage to do what you love, and see where it takes you. Don’t put it off because nobody’s given you permission, or because you’re scared of failing. It’s only when you look back that you’ll realise the moment (or moments) where everything changed.
