Numark is showing its N-Wave 360 DJ monitors here at the BPM Show, an affordable two-speaker DJ system designed to be step up from simple computer speakers for the bedroom DJ.
Featuring 1″ tweeters, 3″ bass drivers and 60W of “music power” (ie not 60W constant, they’ll be far quieter than that), these are a master/slave design, the amplifier being in one speaker along with a simple link to the other. They have distinctive blue LED lights across the front, which I suspect you’ll either love or hate, and to all intents and purposes appear to be a straight update of the company’s now rather old NPM-5 model.
For the desktop/computer DJ, these speakers have the advantage of being magnetically shielded (so they shouldn’t pick up interference from computer monitors, for instance), and have the volume control on the front for convenience (“pro” DJ monitors often have it on the back). There’s a bass boost button for those low volume listening moments, and the possibility of plugging in a subwoofer for ever more bass, too.
While not designed to be a replacement for full power or production monitors, speakers like this are a great step up when you’re wanting to DJ with your first controller or software package and realise that the crappy computer speakers you’ve been using for years don’t quite make the grade. At US$99, they won’t break the bank, either.
• The N-Wave 360s are available imminently at US$99.
