Mixed In Key, creators of the Mixed In Key and Odesi apps, has just released a new tool for DJ/producers: Captain Chords is a plugin for your Mac-based digital audio workstation that lets you quickly dial in chords and hear how they sound in your production. This is a simple way to construct chord progressions without having an intimate knowledge of music theory or chord building, which itself can be one of the most challenging (and frustrating) aspects of producing dance music.
Captain Chords works with any DAW that supports VST plugins (eg Ableton Live, Logic, Cubase), and is part of the Captain Plugins suite of DJ/producer helpers which include the forthcoming Captain Hook, Captain Melody, Captain Beat, and Captain Deep apps.
Chords are the building blocks of modern pop and dance music. There’s so much you can do with a basic knowledge of how chord progressions work: Mixed In Key knows this, and its Odesi software was built specifically to make creating these progressions easier for DJ/producers. With Captain Chords, Mixed In Key wants to take it to a more granular level, this time giving you more freedom to choose from a selection of chords and to build your progression from them.
Since Captain Chords is a plugin, that means it’ll work within your DAW of choice, which makes it more convenient since you don’t have to switch from among multiple apps when producing music. Watch out for our review of it soon.
