An esoteric and expensive Traktor controller has just been announced, called Versus. It’s the result of a collaboration between electronic music stalwarts Magda and NYMA, and is a custom Midi controller built and powered by Faderfox and 4midiloop. It’s got eight faders, a smattering of buttons, four FX knobs and two browse knobs, transport controls, Midi connectivity, and a bunch of other controls you need to take extensive four-deck USB control of Traktor – but no jogwheels or sound card.
While Midi-mappable controllers have waned in mainstream DJ popularity as the controller market has matured, there are still many devotees of custom Midi maps, and the Versus seems to be aimed at that kind of enthusiast, specifically the type with money who’s turned on by tweaking and DJing with a on a one-of-a-kind, limited run, handmade controller. At €1500, it’s well beyond the reach of many beginner DJs, but will appeal to a niche, no doubt. It looks pretty sick sitting on either side of a Rane MP2015, and may appeal to power users of NI’s new Stems function, especially taking into account its fader layout.
