Rekordbox v4.0 Mobile App Now Available For Android

Pioneer DJ has today announced the availability of Rekordbox For Android v4.0, the delayed Android version of the Rekordbox mobile app that brings Android up to speed with Rekordbox for iOS v4, adding full DJing capability to the existing Android Rekordbox music preparation app.

The Rekordbox for Android app works standalone, but like the iOS app it is also compatible with the Pioneer DJ DDJ-FLX4, and includes SoundCloud and TIDAL as music streaming services.

The Android version of the app can be downloaded from Google Play. It is free to download and use, but to unlock fully you’ll need to pay a subscription.

What is Rekordbox for Android?

There has been a Rekordbox app available on Android (and iOS) for quite a while, its previous purpose being to act as a mobile music preparation tool. Especially useful when the user also subscribed to laptop Rekordbox software with cloud library, the apps could be used to add cue points, loops and so on to tracks and undergo other music preparation tasks, which would then sync to the main library.

These latest versions take it a step further by also adding in a full DJ app. In that way, Rekordbox for Android/iOS v4 can be seen as an eventual replacement for the Pioneer DJ WeDJ app, the company’s previous mobile DJ app, whose main disadvantage was not being in the Rekordbox ecosystem and so being a bit of a “dead end” for users wanting to progress through the Pioneer DJ ecosystem.

No sub, no peace…

Bear in mind that the new v4 app requires a subscription for full functionality, even if you also subscribe to Rekordbox desktop software. Without a sub, you are constantly prompted to do so, which gets pretty annoying.

So if you’re used to using the previous free version of Rekordbox simply to help in your music prep, you may want to consider not upgrading to the new version until you have to, and then unfortunately your best option will be to pay the subscription, even if you have no desire to use the new performance features.
