The Lowdown
These Pioneer DJ HRM-5 studio reference monitors from Pioneer are a cheap and versatile choice for bedroom DJ/producers. They sound decent for the price, especially in the low frequencies. The leather ear pads, adjustable headband and swivel mechanism on the ear cups are a useful choice if you plan to use these headphones for DJing, though these are mostly for studio use.
First Impressions / Setting up
The Pioneer DJ HRM-5 are a pair of DJ/producer monitor headphones that can be used for studio work. The headphones come with a pair of 1/8″ stereo jacks, and the cables are detachable. Unfortunately, it does not come with a carrying case of any sort but has a faux leather pouch.
Like its bigger brother the HRM-6, the HRM-5 also has thick memory foam pads and adjustable, folding design.
In Use
Soundwise, the HRM-5s offer decent bass right off the bat. It sometimes feels overwhelming in some tracks that have a pumping bass track in it. The high end is a little more brittle on these cans than its pricier sibling. The mids are still clear though not as detailed as hoped.
The plastic build looks sturdy enough but we’ve seen better builds from the same material in the same price range.
Compared to other headphones in its price range, the HRM-5 sits nicely in the middle, edging the competition by being lightweight and comfortable which is a big plus when wearing it for hours on end in the studio or in the heat of the moment during a live set.
Most of the Amazon reviews seem to enjoy this pair of headphones very much with its powerful sound signature and low price.
Conclusion
The Pioneer DJ HRM-5 may not be at the top of the class but it is an attractive option for people who want a comfortable pair of headphones that deliver powerful bass without shelling out for much.
