In a sideways move for the company, Serato has just launched an iOS music playlist app aimed squarely at consumers (ie non-DJs), called “Pyro” – but you can only currently get it if you live in New Zealand.
Pyro automatically arranges local songs in playlist on your iOS device according to how well they go together, and then you can leave it running throughout an entire party as it seamlessly mixes all the tunes you’ve picked. If you live in New Zealand (Serato is based in NZ), it’s available now as a free download in the App Store.
It’s interesting to see Serato set its sights on a segment beyond the DJ market. Because while smartphones and tablets (and of course, laptops) have really opened up DJing to a broader audience, and it’s never been cheaper and easier to get started, some (most?) people just want a “set and forget” music solution for house parties, get-togethers and car journeys.
This is how we see Pyro fitting in – you just throw songs you want to hear in a playlist, and it does everything else for you. It’s just like the iPod’s “Shuffle” feature, updated for today’s more discerning music lover. Of course, it’ll be very interesting to see how well it handles mixing your music , which is one of its big promises – we’ll be bringing you a review just as soon as we can.
• Pyro is available now in the New Zealand App Store, worldwide launch date forthcoming. Sign up to be notified at the Pyro website.
