If you would like the first ever official skin Serato has released for YOUR copy of Serato DJ Pro, and especially if you hanker after the old days when Serato Scratch Live ruled the roost (long before Serato DJ Pro existed), then you’re in luck.
We’ve got a video demonstrating what it looks like and how to do it, and we also answer all your questions about how to get it below.
How To Activate The New Skin
What do I need?
You need to buy some of the limited edition “Serato Scratch Live” coloured control vinyl that Serato has launched to celebrate the company’s 25th anniversary, and you’ll need access to a DVS system on which you can play that vinyl with your copy of Serato running.
Is this what you told us about last week?
Yes – as we reported then, Serato launched the control vinyl promising an “Easter egg” for purchasers of the coloured versions.
How do I enable the new skin with the vinyl?
As the needle hits a special outro groove on the new vinyl, a new mode is unlocked in Serato DJ Pro from version 3.2.1 onwards that takes the fonts and colours of Serato Scratch Live, even down to played tracks being green instead of blue as they are in the current version of the software. So with DVS set up, you just play the vinyl in those closing grooves to unlock the skin.
Do I need to be using DVS?
Yes, but only to unlock it. Once unlocked, you don’t even need to be using DVS or control vinyl because a new option becomes available within the settings that lets you switch in and out of the Serato Scratch Live skin.
Do I lose modern software features?
No, don’t worry, you don’t lose any of the things they’ve added to the software in the 25 years since. So your stems, key detection and so on are all still there. Essentially, it’s just a cool skin that will certainly turn heads among the DJ community when you use it in the wild.
How can I buy the vinyl?
It is strictly limited, but Serato tells us it has just today gone on sale worldwide. Or of course, find a friend who has bought some and unlock your copy with theirs (we’re presuming that works…).
